I slept fitfully until three a.m., waking with sweat covering my body. I heard the blast of a gun. It took only a moment to realize it was a dream. Again, like always. Upon waking, I never knew if it was the shot Molly fired or Josh’s blast that I heard in my head.

If I’m being honest I know it’s Molly. She haunts me always, unrelenting. Teasing me, knowing I almost made it in time. The fear gripped me as I wondered if I was too late for Piper. My mouth reminded me of the rough grit of sandpaper. My head ached in a chastising way, saying I could no longer drink the way I once did. Guilt pressed on my chest as I realized I had accomplished nothing the night before.

No sign of Piper. I had slept instead of searching. I suppose if I had searched and drawn suspicions I would be shark bait by then. I brushed my teeth, used fresh adhesive on my nose and slicked my hair back into a tight ponytail at the base of my neck. This made my features look sharp and commanding.

“You’re not Adrien Brody,” I told my reflection, “but you’re close.”

Then I shut my mouth as I remembered I could be heard. Of course men had to talk to themselves right? I couldn’t be the only one that had talks with the image in the mirror, surely. I dress in my running shorts, shirt and ASICSs. I had to run some of my nerves off. I also had to get the fog of the previous night’s alcohol out of me. I began to leave the room and noticed Jed slept with his door open. He was on his back, one arm above his head, the other hand shoved in his pants. I grinned and noticed a note by the door.

Wake me when you’re up. We need to talk. No cousin Tilly yet.
